CPRE - The Council for the Protection of Rural England
Now known as “The Countryside Charity”
The Epping Society is a subscribing member of the CPRE, and supports their aims and activities.
Their stated mission is : “We believe in countryside and green spaces that are accessible to all, rich in nature and playing a crucial role in responding to the climate emergency”.
With more than 80% of our District either Epping Forest or Metropolitan Green Belt, we want to preserve and protect these areas from inappropriate developments. The obvious threat is housing sprawl into the countryside; but we also watch for infrastructure & agricultural changes; the Society owes it’s origins to the M11 tunnelling controversy over 25 years ago.
We are also keenly aware that access to the countryside and forest are very important to health and well-being, and the recreational activities represented are frequent reasons for the high quality of life enjoyed by residents, as well as being important attractors to tourism and to prospective residents. These bring pressures too – so we are involved with access issues, footpaths etc.
COPPED HALL is a fine Georgian mansion that is currently under restoration. It is superbly sited on a ridge overlooking its landscaped parkland. The mansion and gardens are situated on a site of ancient human habitation. Many important buildings, from the Medieval, Tudor and Elizabethan eras were demolished prior to the present mansion being built and enlarged by the Victorians.
We are a charity and a membership organisation with a big mission to inspire people about Epping Forest, and to conserve and protect its irreplaceable biodiversity, culture and heritage now and for generations to come. We operate across the whole of Epping Forest, covering 6,000 acres stretching from Manor Park in East London to Epping in Essex.
Epping Forest is for everyone to love.
Our work is to stand up for this wonderful ancient Forest and inspire everyone to do the same. We have regular guided walk programmes to help you get to know Epping Forest, and we operate the Epping Forest Visitor Centre at High Beach on behalf of City of London Corporation (the Conservators). We also help to increase the biodiversity of the Forest through hands-on conservation work, campaigns to raise awareness of the Forest and advocate at planning enquiries to ensure it does not suffer direct damage from more development, traffic or pollution.
